Transforming corporations towards sustainable resource use

Andrea Junge, B E L I E V E .

Dear Corporate Leaders,

The scientific consensus has never been clearer: we are facing a critical juncture in our relationship with the planet. The United Nations 2024 edition of the Global Resources Outlook highlights the pressing need for immediate and concerted action to steer our global trajectory towards sustainable resource consumption and production.

For over 15 years, the International Resource Panel has meticulously gathered data, conducted assessments, and engaged stakeholders to provide an authoritative analysis of our resource use patterns. The findings are stark: since the last report in 2019, global resource consumption trends have not only persisted but accelerated. Without intervention, resource extraction could surge by 60% by 2060, exacerbating environmental degradation and societal risks.

Yet, amidst these challenges lies opportunity. The report outlines pathways to reverse these negative trends, emphasising the critical role of bold policy action. It calls for phasing out unsustainable practices, fostering innovation in meeting human needs, and prioritising social equity within transitions.

As corporate leaders, we have a pivotal role to play in this transformation. It’s imperative that we integrate sustainable resource management into our business strategies, aligning with multilateral environmental agreements and adopting responsible practices. This includes embracing innovative technologies, rethinking supply chains, and advocating for policy frameworks that incentivise sustainability.

The window for action is narrowing, but the potential for positive change remains within reach. By prioritising sustainability in business, strategy, products design and operations, we can chart a course towards a more resilient, sustainable and equitable future for all.

Join us in seizing this momentous opportunity to drive meaningful change throughout your corporation. Download the full report and let’s take decisive steps towards a sustainable tomorrow: Link to the Global Resource Outlook 2024 report:

Together, we can shape a world where prosperity thrives in harmony with nature.
